Gay is signing with the 49ers, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Won major accolades (including the Lou Groza Award) as an outstanding and accurate college kicker with a high success rate across all distances. Consistently dangerous from beyond the 40 and above average on field goal attempts of 50-plus yards, his broad, heavy frame generates distance from a stable base and solid footing. A high level of self-confidence bodes well for his temperament under pressure and reflects a history of overcoming career setbacks and rejection. His somewhat unorthodox field goal technique has come under scrutiny, so he must prove to be consistently reliable on high-stress kicks and extra point attempts as a professional.
