SAN JOSE PICKS UP PRICE'S CONTRACT
The San Jose Sharks acquired a fifth-round draft pick in 2026 and goaltender Carey Price from the Montreal Canadiens for defenseman Gannon Laroque.
What does it give the San Jose Sharks
The Sharks are close to the salary floor (and are expected to trade away a few veterans during the course of 2025-26), so adding an expensive inactive contract like Price's makes sense for them. The key was adding another draft pick here.

What does it give the Montreal Canadiens
For Montreal, moving Price's contract gives them greater cap flexibility going into 2025-26. The Canadiens are expected to continue to actively seek a second-line center upgrade, so this may help with that. Laroque is merely minor-league fodder.
