DURANT DEALT TO HOUSTON!
In a seven-team trade, the Houston Rockets acquired forward Kevin Durant from the Phoenix Suns, and center Clint Capela from the Atlanta Hawks; Phoenix acquired forward Dillon Brooks, guard Jalen Green, a first-round draft pick in 2025 (No. 10 overall), a conditional second-round draft pick in 2026 and a second-round draft pick in 2032 from the Rockets, guard/forward Daeqwon Plowden from the Hawks, a second-round draft pick in 2025 (No. 31 overall) from the Minnesota Timberwolves, and a second-round draft pick in 2025 (No. 41 overall) from the Golden State Warriors; Atlanta acquired forward David Roddy, the right to swap second-round draft picks in 2031 and cash considerations from the Rockets; Golden State acquired a second-round draft pick in 2025 (No. 52 overall) from the Suns, and a second-round draft pick in 2025 (No. 59 overall) from the Rockets; Minnesota acquired a second-round draft pick in 2025 (No. 45 overall) and cash considerations from the Los Angeles Lakers, and a conditional a second-round draft pick in 2026 and the right to swap second-round draft picks in 2032 from the Suns; Brooklyn acquired a conditional second-round draft pick in 2026 and a second-round draft pick in 2030 from the Rockets; and Los Angeles acquired a second-round draft pick in 2025 (No. 36 overall) from the Timberwolves.
What does it give the Houston Rockets
In an extremely complicated trade that broke an NBA record for the number of teams involved, Houston got future Hall of Famer Durant largely because Houston was one of the destinations Durant wanted to go to. The cost was rather expensive for a forward who will turn 37 in September but Durant is still a difference-making star. The Rockets are Durant's fifth NBA organization. Capela is making a return to Houston after spending five seasons in Atlanta. He will likely be used in a backup role by Houston this time around.
What does it give the Phoenix Suns
The Suns knew all along that they were going to move on from Durant, so under those circumstances they made out pretty well here. Brooks is a great defender and a tough player to line up against, while Green is a talented guard with some untapped upside. The draft picks involved in this trade should also help Phoenix down the road.
What does it give the Atlanta Hawks
For the Hawks, this trade does not move the needle at all. Atlanta was likely included to make the money work, as is the case with several other teams involved in this trade. Roddy has no future in Atlanta and may be waived. Getting a bit of cash from the Rockets is nice but otherwise the Hawks will no benefit much from this trade.
What does it give the Golden State Warriors
For the Warriors, a team that looks to bounce back from being in decline recently, they did well to land a pair of draft picks in this trade just so that all of the moving pieces can settle with their new teams. Golden State essentially moved down a bit in order to secure an extra second-round pick in this draft.
What does it give the Minnesota Timberwolves
The Timberwolves' inclusion in this trade is mainly to move a few draft assets around. They also received some cash from the Lakers in this deal, plus the No. 45 overall selection in this year's draft. Minnesota is a team to watch going into the off-season, as they seem close to championship contention.
What does it give the Brooklyn Nets
As opposed to the T'wolves, Brooklyn is clearly in full-blown rebuilding mode heading into this off-season. So, they did well to add a couple more future assets in this multi-team trade.
Fantasy impact
Durant will continue to be a relevant fantasy performer, since he shows few signs of decline. Green could benefit from the move to Phoenix, especially if he starts opposite Devin Booker. Meanwhile, Brooks is mostly a terrific defender whose offensive game is inconsistent. Keep an eye on him early on this season in order to see if he is worth picking up. As for Roddy and Plowden, they have zero fantasy value at this time.
