ROBERTS TO BEANTOWN

The Boston Red Sox acquired outfielder Dave Roberts from the Los Angeles Dodgers for minor-league outfielder Henri Stanley.

What does it give the Boston Red Sox
With right-fielder Trot Nixon continually on the disabled list this year, Roberts gives the Sox a strong platoon in right field between the left-handed hitting Roberts and right-handed hitting Gabe Kapler. He offers much different tools from Kapler, as an all-speed/no-power guy, and that means he can also occasionally spell Johnny Damon in center and at the leadoff spot.

What does it give the Los Angeles Dodgers
Stanley was just traded to the Sox from the Padres in May and was with the Astros' organization just a year ago, so he's well traveled. He's got pretty good offensive tools, able to run well, hit for average and a little power. But he doesn't do any one thing quite well enough to be considered a future starting outfielder in the majors. Currently at Triple-A, he's just about ready to get a try at the big-league level and could wind up as a reliable fourth outfielder.
