WALKER WAIVES CLAUSE FOR CARDS
The St. Louis Cardinals acquired outfielder Larry Walker and cash from the Colorado Rockies for minor-league pitcher Jason Burch and two players to be named later.
What does it give the St. Louis Cardinals
In Walker, the Cards have landed a veteran slugger who may be past his prime. Injuries have slowed down the 37-year-old right-fielder but he definitely is still much better than average. He can still hit .300 with some pop and the Cards won't be asking him to be a savior anyway, with a healthy lead in the NL Central. With corner outfielders Reggie Sanders and Ray Lankford both battling injuries, he gives the Cards a pretty impressive insurance policy.
What does it give the Colorado Rockies
Burch wasn't considered a significant prospect, but is doing what he can to move up the prospect charts this year. The 21-year-old righty has been a strong closer in for Low-A Peoria this year, tied for the Midwest League lead with 21 saves. He puts his great size (6-5, 215 pounds) behind a blazing fastball that racks up the strikeouts, but he needs to gain some command. If he progresses, he's still a couple of years away from Colorado. But the money factor is key for the Rox. Though they're sending a bit St. Louis' way to pay a portion of Walker's hefty contract, they're saving a bunch that will help with re-signing players this winter.
