CABRERA FOR GARLAND

The Chicago White Sox acquired infielder Orlando Cabrera from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for pitcher Jon Garland.

What does it give the Chicago White Sox
The White Sox add the premier defensive shortstop in the American League, which should make manager Ozzie Guillen--a former defensive wizard at the position himself--a very happy camper in 2008. Cabrera should also be a table-setter for Chicago's big bats, as he's coming off his best offensive season with the Angels. The cash considerations are a bonus, considering Cabrera's ability. Juan Uribe, last year's shortstop, is expected to move over to second base to accomodate Cabrera.

What does it give the Los Angeles Angels
Garland should serve as the Angels' No. 3 starter next season--behind ace John Lackey and fellow right-hander Kelvim Escobar. He essentially replaces Bartolo Colon, who has filed for free agency. To replace Cabrera, the Angels have several options. Either Maicer Izturis or Erick Aybar could take over, rookie Brandon Wood may convert back from third base to his natural shortstop position, or the club may make another trade. That said, dealing Cabrera at this time is definitely a gamble.
