RENTERIA TO DETROIT
The Detroit Tigers acquired shortstop Edgar Renteria from the Atlanta Braves for pitcher Jair Jurrjens and outfielder Gorkys Hernandez.
What does it give the Detroit Tigers
The Tigers needed a new starting shortstop, since they plan on moving Carlos Guillen to first base. Enter Renteria, who has been notoriously better in the National League than the AL over the course of his career. Still, he is an upgrade over Sean Casey--the former first baseman who will not be re-signed and replaced by Guillen.
What does it give the Atlanta Braves
The Braves plan on giving Jurrjens a legitimate shot at winning a spot in the rotation next spring. They will also replace Renteria with Cuban infielder Yunel Escobar, who impressed the team at shortstop when Renteria was out of action in 2007. As for Hernandez, he's several years away from challenging for a spot in the Braves outfield, but does project as a potential five-tool player.
