HAREN HEADS TO ARIZONA

The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired pitchers Dan Haren and Connor Robertson from the Oakland Athletics for pitchers Brett Anderson, Dana Eveland and Greg Smith, first baseman Chris Carter and outfielders Carlos Gonzalez and Aaron Cunningham.

What does it give the Arizona Diamondbacks
In Haren, the D'backs acquire an ace right-hander that won't be needed to lead the staff in Arizona. That's Brandon Webb's job. Haren will replace the departed Livan Hernandez as the No. 2 starter, and should complement Webb and veteran left-handers Randy Johnson and Doug Davis nicely. Haren started his career in St. Louis, so he's somewhat familiar with the NL. As for Robertson, he could factor into the bullpen mix as early as 2008.

What does it give the Oakland Athletics
The A's dealt away their ace, but at least they received a wealth of young talent in return. Anderson is the best of the young pitchers acquired, while Gonzalez has star potential in the outfield. Carter is a big power hitter who is probably better suited to the American League. Eveland already boasts Major League experience, so he should help immediately, while Smith and Cunningham are the wild cards. With Haren gone, the A's must hope Rich Harden can remain healthy next year.
