Rainey has averaged 93.6 mph with his fastball so far in 2024, down significantly from the 97.0 mph he averaged over 30 innings in 2022 prior to undergoing Tommy John surgery that August.
Rainey topped out at 92 mph with his fastball while working a scoreless inning of relief during Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals, Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports reports.
Owns a very solid (6-2, 235 pounds) frame and plenty of power in his arm. Can generate excellent velocity on his fastball, so he can be a strikeout machine on the mound. His slider is also a true power pitch. Can be a bit too wild at times, so he needs to continue to work on his control and command of his pitches in order to maximize output in Major League Baseball. His changeup could definitely use more work.
Long Range Potential: Big, hard-throwing reliever with a little upside.
