The Pirates designated Chavis for assignment Monday.
Is a pure hitter who can generate loads of home-run power at all levels. A true run producer, he can hit for average and is reasonable in terms of his strikeout rate. His defense at the hot corner is improving. Lacks athleticism in a big way, so he might not stick at third base in Major League Baseball over the long haul. Has already been suspended once for performance-enhancing drugs, which raises a white flag.
Long Range Potential: Talented, run-producing corner player with good upside.
