RANGERS ADD CARCILLO FROM KINGS

The New York Rangers acquired winger Daniel Carcillo from the Los Angeles Kings for a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2014.

What does it give the New York Rangers
This week top Rangers pugilist {P Derek Dorsett} broke his leg, opening up a need for toughness on the team. Enter Carcillo, an established figher and hitter who can help fill in for Dorsett for the next month or two. Carcillo's affordable contract expires after this season so this is a nice, low-risk short-term fix for a New York squad that has few other players on the current roster who fill that toughness need.

What does it give the Los Angeles Kings
Carcillo wasn't playing much at all for the Kings lately and L.A. still has both {P Kyle Clifford} and {P Jordan Nolan}--both of whom play regularly--to fill their tough-guy quotient. Moving Carcillo saves them a bit of money while opening up a roster spot to let the Kings add some needed young scoring from the AHL (perhaps {P Linden Vey}, up as recently as late December).

Fantasy impact
Dorsett leads the Rangers in both penalty minutes and majors by wide margins, so it'll be surprising if Carcillo doesn't play fairly regularly filling in for him. In fantasy leagues rewarding penalty minutes Carcillo can now be a nice short-term add (especially since he can also score a bit if given the chance). For the Kings it's unclear who might get called up to fill Carcillo's roster spot, but if it's Vey he gets an immediate boost (but probably only in deeper keeper leagues).
