OILERS ACQUIRE SLICK PERRON

The Edmonton Oilers acquired winger David Perron from the St. Louis Blues for winger Magnus Paajarvi and a second-round draft pick in 2014.

What does it give the Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers get an upgrade on left wing here, since Paajarvi would have likely played on the second line behind {P Taylor Hall} but was still a restricted free agent. Perron is signed for three more seasons with a cap hit under $4 million. He doesn't address Edmonton's lack of size up front, but is may allow GM Craig MacTavish to deal away winger {P Ales Hemsky} next (for more size).

What does it give the St. Louis Blues
This deal is more about what happens next for St. Louis than the trade itself. By saving some money here, the Blues will now attempt to re-sign either defenseman {P Alex Pietrangelo} or winger {P Chris Stewart} (or maybe both). Eventually, they'll get around to signing Paajarvi, who may not have a regular spot waiting for him in his new organization. The second rounder here is a bonus.

Fantasy impact
Perron could see a significant spike in fantasy relevance here, as Edmonton plays a far more offensive-oriented game than St. Louis. He could bust out, especially with significant power-play minutes. Paajarvi's value shoots way down here, since he's a question mark to even sign with the Blues. He might even be a role player if he does sign. This move also helps the fantasy value of Blues rookies Dmitrij Jaskin and Ty Rattie.
