FLYERS ADD GOALTENDER MASON
The Philadelphia Flyers acquired goaltender Steve Mason from the Columbus Blue Jackets for goaltender Michael Leighton and a third-round draft pick in 2015.
What does it give the Philadelphia Flyers
In Mason, the Flyers are hoping to find lightning in a bottle here. They're acquiring the backup goaltender from the team they sent another netminder ({P Sergei Bobrovsky}) last off-season. Bobrovsky has gone on to have a Vezina-caliber season for the Jackets, so GM Paul Holmgren will have a lot of explaining to do if Mason doesn't pan out in Philly. Also, sending Columbus a third rounder in this deal appears to be rubbing salt in the wounds of Flyers fans. Acquiring Mason will lead to speculation that the Flyers may buy veteran {P Ilya Bryzgalov} out this summer.
What does it give the Columbus Blue Jackets
Leighton becomes Bobrovsky's backup in Columbus, after spending a little time with 'Bob' in Philadelphia last year. Both were backing up Bryzgalov at the time, so the irony here is rather sweet for Blue Jackets fans. The key to the deal for Columbus is the third rounder, which adds another high pick and potential prospect to the stables. Leighton won't play much down the stretch because Bobrovsky has been lights-out this season (and the Jackets have a legitimate shot at making the playoffs). This is a very good move for Columbus.
Fantasy impact
Mason's impact is tied to Bryzgalov. If the latter continues to play up-and-down hockey in Philadelphia, Mason may take over. Long term, he has some upside now as Philadelphia's possible next starting netminder. However, expectations must be tempered until he starts living up to his potential. As of now, Leighton has no value until or unless Bobrovsky is injured.
