BRUINS TRADE WIDEMAN FOR HORTON, CAMPBELL
The Boston Bruins acquired winger Nathan Horton and forward Gregory Campbell from the Florida Panthers for defenseman Dennis Wideman, a first-round draft pick in 2010 and a third-round draft pick in 2011.
What does it give the Boston Bruins
The Bruins acquire a talented goal-scoring winger in Horton, who will have his pick of playmaking center to choose from in Beantown: Marc Savard, David Krejci, Patrice Bergeron or possibly '10 second overall pick Tyler Seguin (if selected). Horton has been a disappoint so far in his NHL career and needed a change of scenery badly. Campbell is a solid role player who will likely have to settle for a role on the wing in Boston.
What does it give the Florida Panthers
The Panthers take on Wideman's contract, plus add a couple of high draft picks, in this deal. Wideman is a solid offensive defenseman with a right-handed shot, which was lacking in South Florida. He's coming off a down year but should see more offensive responsibilities with the Panthers. The No. 15 overall pick also heads to Florida, which will likely be used on an offensive player for the future. The third rounder is merely to complete the deal. This move is a clear indication that Florida is in complete rebuilding mode right now.
