ANAHEIM ADDS JOHN CARLSON

The Anaheim Ducks acquired defenseman John Carlson from the Washington Capitals for a conditional first-round draft pick in 2026 and a third-round draft pick in 2027.

What does it give the Anaheim Ducks
The Ducks pull off a shocking trade, getting Carlson out of Washington for the first time in his NHL career. The veteran is still a great contributor on offense but his defensive game will be key for Anaheim. He should step into a big role in the top four and on both special teams; the Ducks are going for it.

What does it give the Washington Capitals
The Capitals are not far out of a playoff spot, but they are looking like sellers at the trade deadline. As Washington moves on from Carlson (a pending UFA), the return feels a little light but they did well to get a first-rounder back. Carlson departs as the franchise leader in points by a defenseman.

Fantasy impact
Carlson has missed the last few games with an injury but he has been very productive once again this season. He figures to continue putting up strong points totals in Anaheim, where he could even get a boost if the Ducks offense stays hot to finish the season. Will Carlson quarterback Anaheim's first power-play unit, or will that stay with Jackson LaCombe?
