The Buffalo Sabres acquired center Sam Carrick from the New York Rangers for a third-round draft pick in 2026 and sixth-round draft pick in 2026.

What does it give the Buffalo Sabres
The Sabres are the hottest team in the NHL and appear to be headed to the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time in a long, long time. Carrick is a useful fourth-line center who can kill penalties and play a physical role. He is also good on face-offs.

What does it give the New York Rangers
The Rangers are going nowhere this season, so they have no reason to keep role players such as Carrick on board. The latter has one more season left on his deal, after this one, and he is 34. Trading Carrick at this time is a no-brainer move.
