WEEGAR MOVED TO THE MAMMOTH

The Utah Mammoth acquired defenseman Mackenzie Weegar from the Calgary Flames for defenseman Olli Maatta, center Jonathan Castagna and three second-round draft picks in 2026.

What does it give the Utah Mammoth
In Weegar, the Mammoth land a solid defenseman who can do a little bit of everything well. He can play on either side, as well. In Utah, he is likely to pair with Mikhail Sergachev on the top defense unit, which gives the team even better depth along the blueline. Maatta was barely playing in Utah this season, so moving on from him makes sense.

What does it give the Calgary Flames
For the Flames, this trade is about moving out one of their key veterans for a solid package. Maatta is a solid veteran defenseman who might be a good mentor for some of Calgary's young defensemen. Castagna is a solid prospect currently toiling in the NCAA ranks. But the key to this deal will be the results of the three second-rounders acquired here.

Fantasy impact
Weegar is unlikely to see as much time on the power play in Utah as he was garnering in Calgary. So, his fantasy stock could be on the way down. Maatta is mostly a defensive defender at this stage of his career. Meanwhile, Castagna's stock is likely on the rise moving to Calgary. He should have a better opportunity with the Flames.
