SHARKS ACQUIRE BURNS

The San Jose Sharks acquired defenseman Brent Burns and a second-round draft pick in 2012 from the Minnesota Wild for winger Devin Setoguchi, forward Charlie Coyle and a first-round draft pick in 2011.

What does it give the San Jose Sharks
This is a huge pickup for the Sharks. In Burns, they land a strong offensive blueliner with two-way ability. He'll take some of the load off Dan Boyle, and essentially replace Ian White. He's an upgrade, even though the Sharks paid a steep price to net him. The second rounder next season will lessen the blow, as well.

What does it give the Minnesota Wild
The Wild added three solid pieces here with one move: Setoguchi should provide instant offense from the wing; Coyle provides future offense and a top prospect for their stable; and the pick landed Minnesota a solid prospect in Zack Phillips. Also, trading Burns should open up a roster spot for rookie blueliner Marco Scandella to crack next season's lineup. All told, this was a good deal for both sides.
