SAFONOV SENT TO VANCOUVER
The Vancouver Canucks acquired center Ilya Safonov from the Chicago Blackhawks for future considerations.
What does it give the Vancouver Canucks
A big Russian center, Safonov produced 22 points in 51 KHL games with AK Bars Kazan last season. Is the 24-year-old pivot interested in joining the Canucks? His KHL deal is expected to expire after 2025-26. He is a good player for Vancouver to take a flier on.
What does it give the Chicago Blackhawks
The Blackhawks drafted Safonov in the sixth round (No. 172 overall) of the 2021 draft, but he clearly showed no signs of interest in coming over to North America. So, Safonov was moved in a trade that will likely bring back nothing in return. Did Chicago do Vancouver a solid here?
Fantasy impact
Safonov is one season away from being closer to coming to North America. However, he is more of a two-way center than an offensive force. There is no need to keep him on the radar.
