Merzlikins made 36 of 39 saves in Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Islanders.
Merzlikins will be the starting goaltender for Sunday's game against the Islanders, Jeff Svoboda of the Blue Jackets' official site reports.
The Latvian is a late bloomer who is growing into an NHL starter capable of starting 55-65 games in a season, after several successful seasons in Switzerland. He is a very athletic goalkeeper who never gives up on a play and continues to adapt to the smaller ice surfaces in North America (and the tendencies of NHL shooters). He is an emotional player, and that sometimes gets him in trouble, but is becoming the kind of netminder teams can build around.
