ROCKETS LAND ELIYAHU
The Houston Rockets acquired forward Lior Eliyahu (the 2006 draft's No.44 pick overall) from the Orlando Magic for cash.
What does it give the Houston Rockets
A player who might eventually be a starter in the NBA, but won't likely play for Houston anytime soon. Eliyahu is considered the best player coming out of Israel and has a very well-rounded game and a great frame for success in the NBA. The only drawback is he is likely a few years away from being ready for the jump to the highest level of pro ball, and he also faces a potential two-year tour of duty in the Israeli army. He might be worth the wait, but it will likely be a significant wait.
What does it give the Orlando Magic
Some money to pay their improving young core, and a way to avoid another long wait for a player from abroad. Last year's experience with their 2005 top pick Fran Vazquez ended up being a headache for the team and continues to bring them a certain amount of uncertainty and ridicule from fans. They likely didn't want to risk having to wait for another talented player who might not show up for years. The Magic might have been able to use Eliyahu eventually at small forward, but right now they can probably use the cash more.
