GONZALEZ HEADS TO SAN DIEGO
The San Diego Padres aquired shortstop Alex Gonzalez from the Montreal Expos for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
What does it give the San Diego Padres
Not only did the Padres see top rookie shortstop Khalil Greene go down with an injury on Wednesday, but veteran infielder Rich Aurilia as well. So Gonzalez will be a nice stop-gap until the postseason, should the Padres get there. He's got a little pop in his bat and is as dependable as they come with the glove.
What does it give the Montreal Expos
With Gonzalez becoming a free agent after the season, the Expos knew they weren't going to get much for two-and-a-half weeks of his services. If they do get a player, it will be a minor prospect.
