PADRES LAND REDDING
The San Diego Padres acquired pitcher Tim Redding and cash considerations from the Houston Astros for catcher Humberto Quintero.
What does it give the San Diego Padres
Late in spring training, the Padres began to sour on previously anointed fifth starter Darrell May and Redding immediately gives them a prime candidate to replace him. The 27-year-old righty was a very successful fifth starter for the Astros in 2003 but his role became blurry last season when they brought in new starters. A more clarified role in San Diego could be just what he needs to get back on track.
What does it give the Houston Astros
The Astros had soured on Redding and he'd soured on them, so this is a perfect fit for both. And the fact that the Astros received a catching prospect in return is even better for them. With Brad Ausmus starting to decline and having traded prospect John Buck last year, Quintero becomes the top candidate to be their catcher of the future. He's an excellent defensive backstop and has emerged as a strong contact hitter over the past couple of years.
