PHILS FIND FIT IN WIGGINTON
The Philadelphia Phillies acquired infielder/outfielder Ty Wigginton from the Colorado Rockies for cash.
What does it give the Philadelphia Phillies
Wigginton is great fit for the Phils on several levels. Foremost of those is his ability to bring an above-average power bat to either third base or first base, where Philly has injury worries (in Placido Polanco and Ryan Howard, respectively). Wigginton has proven he can be a quality veteran regular when needed, and he has rare versatility (with the ability to play almost anywhere but catcher, shortstop or center field). He's also a good clubhouse guy who comes at a relative bargain, as the Denver Post reports Philadelphia only has to pay half his $4 million salary in 2012 (and only has to give up a player or more cash if they pick up his 2013 option).
What does it give the Colorado Rockies
Colorado has several young options at third base, and moving Wigginton opens up playing time for them (while saving them some money). The Rox recently signed longtime underachiever Brandon Wood to a minor league deal, and they still have Ian Stewart, Chris Nelson and Jordan Pachecho (who can take Wigginton's utility spot) around.
