MARINERS LAND VETERAN RELIEVER BENOIT
The Seattle Mariners acquired pitcher Joaquin Benoit from the San Diego Padres for pitcher Enyel De Los Santos and infielder Nelson Ward.
What does it give the Seattle Mariners
The Mariners don't really have an established, elite closer so the 38-year-old Benoit could wind up pitching the ninth inning for Seattle. He is coming off a solid campaign in San Diego and has plenty of experience.
What does it give the San Diego Padres
For the Padres, this deal was about maximizing the value of their eighth-inning setup man (since San Diego still has elite closer Craig Kimbrel in the fold). De Los Santos and Ward are far away from the bigs but offer some hope.
Fantasy impact
Benoit's fantasy value should be rising rapidly now that he could become a closer once again in the American League, after spending 2015-16 in the setup role in San Diego. De Los Santos has long-range potential but is several years away, while Ward is more of a fantasy long shot.
