CUBS ADD VETERAN RELIEVER RODNEY
The Chicago Cubs acquired pitcher Fernando Rodney from the Seattle Mariners for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
What does it give the Chicago Cubs
Rodney will be an insurance policy for the Cubs, who are currently without late-inning right-hander Jason Motte because of a shoulder problem. Rodney has experience pitching for Cubs manager Joe Maddon while the two were in Tampa Bay.
What does it give the Seattle Mariners
For the Mariners, this disastrous season can't end quickly enough. At least they were able to parlay their former closer (Rodney) into a a future asset to be named later. With Rodney now gone, the Mariners will use Tom Wilhelmsen and Carson Smith to close.
Fantasy impact
Rodney's save chances may be few and far between down the stretch for the Cubs, so he's a risky late-season pickup at this point. Wilhelmsen's value receives a spike now that he has taken Rodney's spot in the bullpen.
