BUCS TAKE A FLIER ON RHP CAMINERO
The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired pitcher Arquimedes Caminero from the Miami Marlins for cash.
What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates
The 27-year-old Caminero appeared in six big-league games with the Marlins in 2014, but he really struggled (6.2 IP, 10.80 ERA). That said, he was much better in 2013 when he debuted in 'The Show' (13 IP, 2.77 ERA) so there is hope here. The huge (6-4, 250 pounds) righty should compete for a roster spot in spring training.
What does it give the Miami Marlins
The Fish had designated Caminero for assignment following the acquisition of {P Ichiro Suzuki} as a free agent, so they at least got a little cash back in this transaction (something Miami is always interested in). The Marlins have several candidates for bullpen duty this season, so Caminero was expendable.
Fantasy impact
His '14 numbers at Triple-A New Orleans (63 IP, 10 saves, 79 K) suggest Caminero may have some fantasy appeal as a dark horse heading into the new season. However, he will need to leapfrog over several others with Pittsburgh to become a viable option.
