The Seattle Mariners acquired outfielder Seth Smith from the San Diego Padres for pitcher Brandon Maurer.
What does it give the Seattle Mariners
Seattle did well here to pick up a veteran left-hand-hitting outfielder who has experience playing in the American League West (former Oakland Athletics player). He should be a nice complement to {P Robinson Cano} and fellow newcomer {P Nelson Cruz} in the middle of the Mariners lineup.
What does it give the San Diego Padres
Smith essentially lost his job in the San Diego outfield this off-season after the club went on a shopping spree to land {P Matt Kemp}, {P Justin Upton} and {P Wil Myers}. Therefore, the Padres decided to send him back to the American League for reliever Maurer, a decent pitcher who should help the Padres in 2015.
Fantasy impact
Smith moves from one pitcher-friendly park to another but his playing time is far more guaranteed now that he's in Seattle. Therefore, Smith's fantasy value is on the rise. Maurer's fantasy value, on the other hand, remains limited since he won't be a candidate for a lot of saves in San Diego.
