PADRES GET RELIEVER KELLEY FROM YANKEES
The San Diego Padres acquired pitcher Shawn Kelley from the New York Yankees for pitcher Johnny Barbato.
What does it give the San Diego Padres
The Padres were a little light in terms of quality relievers heading into 2015, so they decided to deal a relief prospect for a surer bet in Kelley, who is now 30 years old. He's a strikeout artist who struggled a bit in Yankee Stadium, so a move to PETCO Park (and the National League) should be welcomed with open arms. Look for Kelley to set up {P Joaquin Benoit}.
What does it give the New York Yankees
In Barbato, the Yankees land a 22-year old with plenty of upside as a late-inning reliever. However, this move creates a bit of a hole in terms of right-handed setup men for new closer {P Dellin Betances}. Expect the Yankees to make more moves to remedy the situation. Barbato may begin '15 in Triple-A ball and could find his way to the big leagues at some point.
Fantasy impact
Kelley's numbers should improve in the NL pitching for the Pads, so his fantasy stock is rising. Barbato has a bit of dark horse appeal for 2015 but is viewed more as a long-range keeper reliever at this stage of his career.
