RANGERS GET DETWILER FROM THE NATIONALS
The Texas Rangers acquired pitcher Ross Detwiler from the Washington Nationals for infielder Chris Bostick and pitcher Abel de los Santos.
What does it give the Texas Rangers
Despite the fact he was relegated to a bullpen role with the Nationals last season, Detwiler will be a candidate for the Rangers' rotation in 2015. The 28-year old was a victim of the numbers game in Washington, and is better suited for starting anyway. He doesn't throw hard but is a savvy lefty with a feel for pitching. He should compete for the No. 4 or 5 starter role in Texas. The fact he's moving to a hitters' park in Arlington is a bit concerning, though.
What does it give the Washington Nationals
The Nationals are a good landing spot for 21-year-old Bostick, a quality infield prospect whose bat is better than his glove. If he can make defensive improvements at second base, he could become Washington's second baseman of the future. If not, he'll need to become a bit more adequate with the glove at all positions in order to turn into a utility man. As for de los Santos, he may also have a bright future as a reliever. The 22-year-old needs time, though.
Fantasy impact
Detwiler was a fantasy non-factor pitching in long and middle relief with the Nationals, so obviously moving back to a starting role is a positive for fantasy purposes. However, the move to Texas could hurt him if he cannot pitch according to his new home park. Therefore, buyer beware on Detwiler. Bostick has intriguing keeper-league potential, while de los Santos should also be on the long-range fantasy radar.
