CLEVELAND SHORES UP CATCHING DEPTH WITH GIMENEZ

The Cleveland Indians acquired catcher Chris Gimenez from the Texas Rangers for future considerations.

What does it give the Cleveland Guardians
With regular starting backstop {P Yan Gomes} out lately to a concussion, still-in-the-Wild-Card-hunt Cleveland needs a veteran backup for young fill-in starter {P Roberto Perez}. Enter Gimenez, who can play several positions besides catcher and can provide a little pop with his bat when in a groove. This isn't a substantial move, but a solid depth addition (and an inexpensive one, since Gimenez has a small contract expiring after this season).

What does it give the Texas Rangers
Gimenez was at Triple-A before this move so there isn't much of an effect at the major-league level. It merely saves Texas a little money in the short term, and opens up some room on the Triple-A roster for more promising, younger players. The Rangers are well out of contention, so this is really just a small maneuver to clear things up a bit ahead of next season.

Fantasy impact
Gimenez has shown signs of hitting well when in the minors, but not nearly as much in the majors. At this point he's a journeyman depth player, so isn't one to consider picking up in fantasy (unless he somehow finds himself starting and gets on a hot streak). There's no fantasy fallout for Texas.
