ASTROS ACQUIRE CF DEXTER FOWLER
The Houston Astros acquired outfielder Dexter Fowler and a player to be named later from the Colorado Rockies for pitcher Jordan Lyles and outfielder Brandon Barnes.
What does it give the Houston Astros
Houston needs all the help they can get in several areas, so landing a quality center-fielder and switch-hitter in Fowler is a solid move at this time. That said, center field was (potentially) one of the Astros' deepest positions, with both {P George Springer} and {P Delino DeShields Jr.} on the way as top prospects. For now, Fowler will improve the team both offensively and defensively, adding a little power and speed in the process. Signed through 2015, he may not finish his deal in Houston.
What does it give the Colorado Rockies
Lyles should be the key player for the Rockies here, as he has a very promising arm and overall starting potential. That said, he has struggled as a big leaguer and could probably use a fresh start. Going from Houston to Colorado won't help him too much in terms of home ball parks, but he should get more run support and pitch in front of a better defensive squad in Denver. Barnes may see ample playing time in center field as Fowler's replacement, since Colorado has an opening there.
Fantasy impact
Fowler may score far fewer runs in Houston, partly because of a weaker supporting cast with the Astros and partly because he may no longer hit at the top of the batting order. That said, he may embrace his new surroundings and take on a much bigger role in this offense. As for Lyles, he still has plenty of upside but needs to start showing better big-league results. He should be able to pitch regularly in Colorado if he wins a starting role. Consider him a sleeper. Barnes is a dark horse and an overachiever at this point.
