DODGERS ADD CATALYST VICTORINO
The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired outfielder Shane Victorino from the Philadelphia Phillies for pitchers Josh Lindblom and Ethan Martin, and a player to be named later.
What does it give the Los Angeles Dodgers
In Victorino, the Dodgers have added an offensive catalyst who may wind up batting leadoff down the stretch. With Matt Kemp entrenched in center field, Victorino should play left field for the Dodgers. There's a very good chance that Victorino will test the free-agent market this winter (since he has a LOT more value as a center-fielder than corner outfielder), so this looks like a pure rental situation for contending Los Angeles.
What does it give the Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies may or may not be in contention after the July 31 trade deadline, but at least they've added a quality arm for the bullpen and solid pitching prospect. Lindblom is the former, and he should make an immediate impact as either a middle reliever or setup man for Jonathan Papelbon. Martin is the latter, and he has pretty good upside as a No. 2 or 3 starter in the big leagues. Overall, this is a great deal for Philly.
