ANGELS LAND OUTFIELDER COWGILL
The Los Angeles Angels acquired outfielder Collin Cowgill from the New York Mets for outfielder Kyle Johnson.
What does it give the Los Angeles Angels
This move adds a little depth to the Angels outfield, since center-fielder {P Peter Bourjos} and right-fielder {P Josh Hamilton} have been battling a few injury issues lately. Cowgill can play all three outfield positions, so he should find his way back to the big leagues at some point this season. He might replace {P J.B. Shuck} on the 25-man roster, since the latter has struggled with his defense in left field. However, Cowgill must prove he can hit with more consistency.
What does it give the New York Mets
Johnson is a 23-year-old outfielder still toiling in low Single-A ball, so he should be viewed as more of a project at this point. He has great speed and base-stealing acumen but isn't a power hitter. If he does reach the major leagues, it'll eventually be based on his ability to get on base and set the table. On the positive side, he does take walks and display leadoff potential. All told, this was a decent pickup for an outfielder (Cowgill) who was designated for assignment.
Fantasy impact
Cowgill won't likely see regular playing time in Anaheim barring more injury woes for one of the Angels' top three outfielders. He needs to start making more noise in the bigs because his star is fading quickly. As for Johnson, he's a long-range prospect with slight keeper-league value due to his base-stealing ability.
