YANKS FINALLY FIND AN OUTFIELDER
The New York Yankees acquired outfielder Matt Lawton from the Chicago Cubs for minor-league pitcher Justin Berg.
What does it give the New York Yankees
The Yanks have been searching a long time for an extra quality outfielder, one who can help them both at the plate and with the glove. And they got that in Lawton. Of course, though he's a two-time all-star, he's no savior. But, with his on-base skills, occasional pop, and strong arm, he'll definitely help them out. Plus, his left-handed swing suits the short porch in right at Yankee Stadium. The one caveat is that he didn't hit well under the Big-Apple scrutiny with the Mets in 2001.
What does it give the Chicago Cubs
The Cubs, who acquired Lawton at the non-waiver trade deadline, find themselves rapidly falling out of the race, and no longer had the need for Lawton to spark their lineup. As for Berg, he's a big, 21-year-old righty who's not considered a major prospect, but has been solid over the past couple of months as a starter and reliever for Low-A Staten Island.
