ROX, SOX SWAP KIM FOR C.J.
The Colorado Rockies acquired pitcher Byung-Hyun Kim and cash from the Boston Red Sox for catcher Charles Johnson and pitcher Chris Narveson.
What does it give the Colorado Rockies
This trade gives Kim a third chance of sorts. Both the Diamondbacks and Red Sox have now given up on him and the always pitching-starved Rockies will now give him a shot. The righty has been used as both a closer and a starter but will probably fill a middle-relief role for now in Colorado. If he can return to form, he could enter the rotation or even be considered the backup to closer Chin-Hui Tsao.
What does it give the Boston Red Sox
It had been clear for a long time that the Rockies no longer had interest in using Johnson, once an all-star catcher, in any significant capacity. And it seems the Sox don't either, as he was released immediately after the trade. The Rockies are retaining most of his hefty salary, while the Sox are paying most of Kim's, so the trade of Johnson was merely a technicality. Narveson was the real acquisition here for the Sox. He's a 23-year-old left-handed pitching prospect who was part of the deal that sent Larry Walker to the Cardinals last summer. His fastball sits in the low 90s and he has a strong curveball and will likely start the season at Triple-A.
