PATRICK BAILEY GOES TO THE GUARDIANS
The Cleveland Guardians acquired catcher Patrick Bailey from the San Francisco Giants for pitcher Matt Wilkinson and a competitive balance round A draft pick in 2026 (No. 29 overall).
What does it give the Cleveland Guardians
In Bailey, the Guardians bring in one of the better defensive catchers in baseball. He does not offer a lot at the plate, but Cleveland already was not getting much offense from their catching tandem of Bo Naylor and Austin Hedges, so Bailey will at least be a defensive upgrade. The 26-year-old also comes with several years of teams control. He could form a longer-term tandem with Naylor, who for now was optioned following the trade.
What does it give the San Francisco Giants
The struggling Giants are going a new direction after several seasons of Bailey as their starting catcher. Recent call-up Jesus Rodriguez has impressed early, and Daniel Susac should be his back-up. This trade gives them another good draft pick and a promising left-handed pitching prospect in Wilkinson.
Fantasy impact
Bailey is not a fantasy relevant catcher, and that should not change after this trade. However, if you need a catching upgrade, keep an eye on Rodriguez in San Francisco. He should now get plenty of playing time with Bailey no longer in the picture. As well, Wilkinson has good strikeout ability as a starter, so he could be of interest as he gets closer to his big-league debut.
