SONNY GRAY SENT TO BOSTON
The Boston Red Sox acquired pitcher Sonny Gray and cash from the Boston Red Sox for pitchers Richard Fitts and Brandon Clarke, and a player to be named later.
What does it give the Boston Red Sox
In Gray, the Red Sox add a durable veteran starter to their rotation. The right-hander's stats were down overall in 2025, but he still made a valuable 32 starts and struck out 201 in 180.2 IP. Gray is not getting any younger, so he could be starting to decline, but he is also a decent candidate for a bounce-back season. He should be a good fit in the middle of Boston's rotation. They also got cash from St. Louis to cover part of his contract this season.
What does it give the St. Louis Cardinals
The Cardinals are shaking up their roster this off-season, and this trade helps them get younger. Fitts is a right-hander who should challenge for a spot in the rotation this season. The 26-year-old may not have a lot of upside, but he could still be a useful MLB starter. On the other hand, Clarke is a younger prospect with greater potential. One of Boston's best pitching prospects, the left-hander is a valuable addition for the Cardinals as they retool.
Fantasy impact
Gray will not be helped significantly by this trade, as he will now pitch home games at hitter-friendly Fenway Park. Still, he could be a good target to buy low on this season, after a down year. As for the new Cardinals pitchers, wait and see on Fitts. He will need to impress at the MLB level before being rostered. Clarke is likely a few years away from the big leagues, but with his good strikeout ability, his progress could be worth monitoring over time.
