PADRES ADD BOTH O'HEARN AND LAUREANO

The San Diego Padres acquired designated hitter/first baseman Ryan O'Hearn and designated hitter/outfielder Ramon Laureano from the Baltimore Orioles for pitchers Boston Bateman, Tyson Neighbors and Tanner Smith, and infielders Brandon Butterworth, Victor Figueroa and Cobb Hightower.

What does it give the San Diego Padres
This trade provides the Padres with two veteran hitters who are enjoying strong seasons. Both O'Hearn and Laureano should see lots of playing time, and they are clear upgrades on some of the depth players San Diego relied on earlier in the year.

What does it give the Baltimore Orioles
Baltimore is retooling at the trade deadline, and this deal got them an impressive six prospects in return. Most notable among them are probably Bateman (a left-handed starter) and Hightower (a shortstop), San Diego's second- and third-round picks in the 2024 draft, respectively. For the Orioles, both O'Hearn and Laureano were unlikely to be long-term fits, so this was a good trade to address organizational depth.

Fantasy impact
O'Hearn and Laureano probably won't benefit any from this trade. They will likely hit lower in San Diego's order and may see fewer starts as the year goes on. Still, both have their value in deeper leagues. As for the Orioles prospects, none are expected to be factors in fantasy leagues imminently. Keep an eye on Bateman in coming seasons, though.
