TRIBE LANDS LOWE FROM ATLANTA
The Cleveland Indians acquired pitcher Derek Lowe and cash from the Atlanta Braves for pitcher Chris Jones.
What does it give the Cleveland Guardians
The Indians are a team on the rise, and part of taking the next step is adding a veteran workhorse starter. That makes Lowe a solid pickup here, especially since he fits in well with their staff's groundball-inducing focus. Lowe brings some risk, though: he's 38 years old and went 0-5 with an 8.75 ERA this past September. While Lowe's contract is huge, it expires after next season and the Tribe get a big cash payment to help pay for much of the deal's final season. Overall, this is a nice addition if Lowe can re-find his form in Cleveland.
What does it give the Atlanta Braves
For the Braves this deal is as much about freeing up innings as it is about freeing up salary. They do save some money by moving Lowe, but Atlanta also opens up significant opportunity for stud starting pitching prospects such as Mike Minor, Julio Teheran and Randall Delgado. The addition of Jones isn't likely to help them anytime soon, as he's a soft-throwing lefty reliever who's still learning in the lower minors.
