ASTROS LAND WIGGINTON FOR WHEELER
The Houston Astros acquired infielder Ty Wigginton and cash from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for pitcher Dan Wheeler.
What does it give the Houston Astros
It would appear the Astros have officially given up on Morgan Ensberg at third base with this deal, as Wigginton will surely slip right into the hot corner and the middle of the lineup on a daily basis. Over the past two seasons he's emerged from utility obscurity to be a valuable everyday player in Tampa and he'll hope to continue to show off his solid power in Houston's hitter haven.
What does it give the Tampa Bay Rays
Since arriving in Houston during the 2004 season, Wheeler has become one of the game's top setup men, but struggled this year when he was converted to closer during the season's first couple of months. But he's been better of late and will no doubt give the Rays the quality, veteran late-relief help they've been needing right through the 2008 season, when Wheeler becomes a free agent.
