BLUE JAYS GET BERRIOS FROM MINNY
The Toronto Blue Jays acquired pitcher Jose Berrios from the Minnesota Twins for infielder/outfielder Austin Martin and pitcher Simeon Woods Richardson.
What does it give the Toronto Blue Jays
The 27-year-old Berrios is a major addition for the Blue Jays, especially because he will be with the club at least through 2022 (he is eligible for arbitration after next season). Toronto now has two quality starters in the reliable left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu and Berrios. Are they enough to claim a wild card berth?
What does it give the Minnesota Twins
Minnesota did very well here. Martin is a terrific prospect who is a natural shortstop (he was blocked by Bo Bichette in Toronto) with plenty of versatility. He should come quickly now that he is with the Twins organization. Woods Richardson is also a solid prospect, so the Twins got value back for Berrios.
Fantasy impact
Martin could now be considered either the shortstop or the third baseman of the future with Minnesota. His bat will carry him, so he should definitely be owned in virtually all keeper leagues. He has a chance to crack the big-league roster next year, so he may be considered in all non-keeper drafts in 2022. Woods Richardson is also on the keeper radar, although his stock is not nearly as high as Martin's. As for Berrios, he remains a quality fantasy starting pitcher. Proceed as always with him.
