WHITE SOX BOLSTER INFIELD
The Chicago White Sox acquired infielder Geoff Blum from the San Diego Padres for minor-league pitcher Ryan Meaux.
What does it give the Chicago White Sox
The Sox have opened deadline day by acquiring a versatile veteran who can fill in just about anywhere around the infield, giving them the depth they'll need as a team looking to go all the way. While he doesn't have a game-breaking bat, he consistently puts the ball in play and can do the little things well.
What does it give the San Diego Padres
Meaux is an aging prospect who came to the White Sox around this time three years ago from the Giants for Kenny Lofton. Clearly, his trade value has dropped a bit since then now that he's 26 and hasn't appeared in the majors. But he is a right-handed reliever who has had success at Triple-A this year and at lower levels in the past, so he may have a future in middle or late relief.
