VALDEZ TO JOIN FLORIDA ROTATION
The Florida Marlins acquired pitcher Ismael Valdez from the San Diego Padres for minor-league pitcher Travis Chick.
What does it give the Miami Marlins
After trading Brad Penny on Friday, the Fish were bound to pick up another starter to fill his place in the rotation. Valdez will do that, but he can't be as good as Penny had been for them. But the rotation has been missing a veteran presence and that is another thing this 30-year-old righty will give them. Provided Josh Beckett can stay healthy, they'll only need Valdez to be a fifth starter, so they won't be expecting him to do what Penny did.
What does it give the San Diego Padres
Chick is a young righty just making a name for himself this year. When he's hit, he's been hit hard, but for the most part, he's been really rough on Low-A hitters, offering up some hot stuff with good command. He can still be a little wild at times and is very much a work in progress.
