ANGELS ADD FOWLER FROM ST. LOUIS
The Los Angeles Angels acquired outfielder Dexter Fowler from the St. Louis Cardinals for a player to be named later.
What does it give the Los Angeles Angels
The Angels will probably use Fowler in right field next to center-fielder Mike Trout, and the veteran might be a solid stopgap measure for Los Angeles (who have prospect Jo Adell waiting in the wings). Also, LA will only be on the hook for $1.75 million of Fowler's contract. So, this move is a no-brainer for the Halos.
What does it give the St. Louis Cardinals
The Cardinals clearly wanted to move on from Fowler, which explains why they agreed to pay $12.75 million of his contract to send him to LA. They are probably not going to receive much in return, so this trade looks like a clear salary dump. Dylan Carlson, Tyler O'Neill, Harrison Bader and Lane Thomas figure to play more.
Fantasy impact
Nobody really wins after this trade from a fantasy perspective. Fowler's presence in LA hurts Adell's 2021 prospects, although he remains a solid keeper-league option. Fowler's days as a good fantasy outfielder may also be numbered, while the St. Louis outfield situation still needs some sorting out.
