BRANYAN TOSSED TO CARDINALS
The St. Louis Cardinals acquired infielder Russell Branyan from the Philadelphia Phillies for a player to be named later.
What does it give the St. Louis Cardinals
With third baseman Scott Rolen questionable for the rest of the season, the Cards went out and got a proven big-league bat in Branyan. Though he's never quite proven himself as an everyday player, he can start the occasional game at the hot corner or in left field, while providing plenty of left-handed power off the bench.
What does it give the Philadelphia Phillies
Branyan only got nine at bats, mostly off the bench, for the Phillies in three-plus weeks since being acquired from the Indians. Clearly, he wasn't needed, so anything they get for him will be a bonus.
