ERIC HAASE HEADED TO DETROIT
The Detroit Tigers acquired catcher Eric Haase from the Cleveland Indians for cash.
What does it give the Detroit Tigers
The Tigers have Austin Romine, Grayson Greiner and Jake Rogers at the catching position, but adding Haase makes sense. For one thing, none of the other catching candidates are sure bets for 2020. Secondly, the 27-year-old Haase appears to be a late-blooming talent with plenty of offensive pop. Look for Haase to compete for a roster spot with the other three backstops during spring training.
What does it give the Cleveland Guardians
The Indians had designated Haase for assignment last month to make room on the 40-man roster for new second baseman Cesar Hernandez, so they were at least able to get back some cash from the Tigers for his services. The Tribe value defense more than offense from behind the dish, which explains their decision to let Haase go. Will this move come back to bite Cleveland?
Fantasy impact
Haase is a player to monitor closely in spring training. He has a lot of home-run power at a premium position for fantasy players, so he could even be a decent option as a late-round draft pick in very deep keeper leagues.
