MALDONADO FOR KEMP

The Houston Astros acquired catcher Martin Maldonado from the Chicago Cubs for infielder/outfielder Tony Kemp.

What does it give the Houston Astros
This is a trade that works for both teams. Maldonado should provide better backup catching support for Robinson Chirinos than incumbent Max Stassi, who has really struggled with the bat this season. Also, the Astros recently designated Kemp for assignment so he was no longer in the team's plans.

What does it give the Chicago Cubs
The Cubs did not keep Maldonado for very long, after acquiring him from Kansas City for pitcher Mike Montgomery earlier in the month. With Willson Contreras back from injury, Maldonado once again became expendable. Kemp should be used as a utility man in the absence of Ben Zobrist (personal reasons).

Fantasy impact
There is nothing to see here, as Maldonado will remain a backup catcher in Houston (and is not much of an offensive performer even if he were to receive increased at-bats), while Kemp is going to be used all over the field by Chicago (but his starts may be few and far between).
