YANKS YIELD RELIEVERS SHREVE & GALLEGOS FOR VOIT

The New York Yankees acquired first baseman Luke Voit and international bonus pool money in 2018-19 from the St. Louis Cardinals for pitchers Chasen Shreve and Giovanny Gallegos.

What does it give the St. Louis Cardinals
The recent trading away of fireballer Sam Tuivailala to Seattle (along with the demotion of Greg Holland) makes Shreve and Gallegos important depth additions to the St. Louis bullpen. Additionally, the Cardinals generally do a good job of maximizing the talent of their pitchers, so this is a solid re-shuffling by management.

What does it give the New York Yankees
This move accomplishes two objectives for the Yankees: first, they add a solid and underrated depth bat in Voit; and second, they boost their available bonus pool funds to give them more options to sign international prospects. Their recent bullpen addition of former Orioles closer Zach Britton made Shreve and Gallegos expendable.

Fantasy impact
There is little to no fantasy fallout from this trade. Neither of Shreve nor Gallegos looks likely to play a major role for the Cardinals the rest of this season, but both might be bullpen regulars for St. Louis next season. As for Voit, he is a very underrated and polished batter without much left to prove in the minors, so down the stretch he might get a chance to provide some punch off the Yankees bench.
