BUCS GET NADY FROM METS FOR PITCHERS

The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired outfielder Xavier Nady from the New York Mets for pitchers Roberto Hernandez and Oliver Perez.

What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates
Having traded away first baseman Sean Casey earlier in the day, Nady immediately becomes the best bet to take over Casey's role. The 27-year-old slugger has had a breakthrough season in New York as an outfielder, but is plenty capable of playing first base. He's the prototypical first-base slugger, with a power-charged bat, but one also prone to strikeouts.

What does it give the New York Mets
The Mets have been on the lookout to improve their bullpen and Hernandez is one of the names that was rumored to be headed their way, so they got what they wanted there. Formerly a top closer, even at 41 he can serve as a solid setup man. As for Perez, he's a major reclamation project. Still just 24, his five-year big-league career has been filled with ace-making ups and disastrous downs, the latter being the most common these days, as he was sent to the minors a month prior to the deal. The Mets must hold hope that they can turn him around. If they can do that, they've made an excellent deal.
